It's a real, useful claim when it's true — but it's also the single most common source of buyer frustration in this category, because the phrase gets used to describe parts that still need a separate, unadvertised trip to a locksmith or dealer before the vehicle will actually start.
What "plug and play" should actually include
For a part like an ignition switch module or immobilizer to genuinely be plug and play, three things need to happen before it ever ships:
- It's programmed to your VIN before it leaves the warehouse — not "programmable," already programmed, using the VIN you provided at checkout.
- The key or fob that ships with it is matched to that same programming. On modules that work with more than one fob style, this means the seller needs to know exactly which fob your vehicle uses — not guess, not send the most common one and hope.
- Nothing else is required to finish the job beyond the physical install itself. If a locksmith visit, a dealer trip, or a specific scan tool is genuinely needed for your particular vehicle, that should be disclosed before you pay, not discovered after the part arrives.
